Wow, I’m 200 days into my 365 day sketching challenge. That’s a lot of days. That’s a lot of drawings. That’s a lot of blog posts! It’s also a very nice round number. I know the -ennial part of bicentennial refers to years so I tried to figure out what a 200 day milestone should be. The latin word for day is diēs but I’m not 100% sure what form that would take to match the form annus is taking in bicentennial. Bicentdies? Bicentdiebus? Bicentdiel? Bicendiel? I’m about out of educated guesses here and moving swiftly into the territory of blind stabs in the dark. Does anyone with a bit more Latin under their belt than me feel like taking a crack at this one?
Anyway, 200th bicentdie-whatever or not, it’s still a Sunday. That means that it’s time for another Sunday hand sketch. I always seem to end up doing really basic or really boring sketches for all of my big milestones. Oh well, such is life. I need practice with drawing hands so that’s what I’m doing. It’s all in the name of progress, I assure you!
As for the sketch itself, well, I would like to take this moment to emphasize that the fact that the hand is going off the page is entirely for stylistic reasons. It was definitely 100% intentional. It certainly has nothing at all to do with my complete inability to accurately gauge sizing and proportions on my first try. On a positive note, I am getting better at just letting go and not trying to squeeze things on the page when they won’t fit. Maybe in the next 165 I’ll be able to figure out how to scale things so that they don’t need to be squished in. One step at a time.
Congratulations and nice job! I kinda like it leaving the bounds of the page!

Thank you 🙂 I kind of like it too, even if it wasn’t entirely as intentional as I might claim. I titled the image itself “Reaching Beyond the Page”. That’s what it feels like to me.

Awesome. More than half of the time, what it post is unplanned. Almost always. Especially with watercolor. It is what it is, but every drawing is a step forward. I do like this, especially because it’s a hand and should be active. :))

Lol, this is true. This is actually one of my favourite hand poses that I’ve done so far for that reason. Usually I just plop my hand down somewhere and all of the drawings come out looking very similar. I was getting a bit frustrated with that so this time I just kept moving my hand around until I found a pose I liked and then held it.

Nicely done, and congrats!
I don’t know any Latin, but I like the sound of Bicentdiebus.

Thank you 🙂
I think bicentdiebus is my favourite too. I’m not sure how grammatically correct it is but it sounds nice.
