Day 59: A Seashell Sketch and Some Feelings of Inadequacy

A ConchToday’s sketch is of a conch that my parents have on their bookshelf.  Apparently it was inherited from my step-father’s parents.  Again I was mostly just trying to get the basic lines that make up the shape.  This one had a much more interesting shape than most of the objects I’ve been drawing lately.  I’m not sure it’s the most accurate representation but I think the proportions worked out pretty well and it’s not too far off.  I also may not have chosen the mot interesting angle for this sketch.  There were just so many interesting angles to choose from. I might sketch it again from a different angle on another day. Continue reading

Day 58: A Day of Commuting

Commuters 1I really did draw today, just like I promised.  I sketched quite a lot actually.  I went into town again and was out all day which allowed me to see lots of interesting people and get interesting sketches.  The only problem is … I was out all day.  By the time I got home I was totally exhausted.  So I’m really tired right now and as a result don’t have much to say about these sketches or anything else.

So yeah, I saw lots of cool people.  I tried to draw them all stealthily like and for the most part failed horribly.  Quite a few of them weren’t looking at me and the ones who were quite often shifted and moved around a lot which made them really hard to capture.  I tried to still get across a general impression of the people as I saw them.  Some turned out better than others.  I did six pages of these in my sketchbook so I’m posting the rest below.  Continue reading

Day 57: An Electric Pencil Sharpener

Electric Pencil SharpenerToday’s sketch isn’t much to look at I’m afraid.  It is another one of my random object life drawings but I didn’t put as much time into it as I have some of the others and it’s a pretty boring object to begin with.

There’s this project that I told myself I was going to finish this month … that I’m definitely not going to finish this month.  Anyway, I wanted to feel like I’d at least made some progress on it so I was mostly working on that today instead of sketching.  I suppose that’s only fair since for the rest of the month I’ve been mostly working on my drawing (or trying to learn more about drawing anyway) instead of working on the project.  Why does February have to be such a short month?  Hopefully tomorrow I’ll get a bit more sketching done.

I haven’t done my random drawing exercises for a couple days now and I’m actually starting to miss them.  I’ll have to get back to those soon too.  Tonight though I really need to get an early night because I have another early morning tomorrow.  I’ll get this whole balance thing sorted out sooner or later.

Day 56: A Stapler and Some Random Doodles

StaplerFor my random household object of the day I chose a stapler.  It was a bit of an oddly shaped stapler so it may not have been the best choice ever.  Also I have a bit of a headache and am feeling suboptimal as a result so this may not be the most amazing sketch of all time.  I’m not as happy with it as I was with the screwdriver is what I’m trying to say here.  Still, I do think that by and large it does look like a stapler.  At least I don’t seem to be getting any worse at this life drawing thing.  That’s encouraging. Day 55: Just a Regular Ol’ Screwdriver

A Screwdriver (sadly not sonic)So apparently I’m losing track of the days already.  Yesterday I got a bit ahead of myself and claimed to be on Day 55 of my 365 day challenge.  This was clearly a dirty rotten lie.  Today is actually Day 55 though.  I checked this time… well, I did the math anyway.  Of course I can’t have two Day 55s!  Then everyone would know that I’m a liar.  So I’ve fixed yesterday’s post to reflect my new and more accurate understanding of time, dates and mathematics.  I’m sure you all needed to know that.

As for that drawing thing that I sometimes do (is that what this blog is supposed to be about?), well I did one of those today too.  It’s a sketch of a screwdriver.  Again, this is a specific real life screwdriver not a made up one.  That’s right, I managed to find yet another random household object to draw.  I also spotted a few others while I was looking for one so I think I may be able to keep this still life drawing thing going for a while longer.  Oh yay, how fun!  Well they may not be much to look at but I am beginning to buy into the idea that they can be quite educational. Day 54: A Teacup! Or… I suppose it’s just a mug

A Tea Cup Mug ThingToday I decided to draw a mug.  More specifically, the mug that I was drinking my tea out of.  I’m not entirely clear on the distinction between a teacup (a purpose designed cup?) and just a regular cup that has tea in it.  Either way. this is my drawing of that particular object.  I seem to have a decent string of life drawings going right now so I figured I may as well keep it up, at least until I run out of ideas for objects to draw.  I’m told it’s good practice. Day 53: A Sketchy Hand Gesture

Hand GestureToday is Sunday and for those of you who don’t know, I arbitrarily decided back in January that every Sunday I would make and effort to draw a hand.  So far it’s always been my own hand because that one is attached to the rest of my body and therefore most readily available.  It also gives the opportunity to get some more practice with life drawing which is always a good thing.

The challenge I’m finding is trying to come up with creative new ways to pose my hand that I haven’t already done.  Today I thought I’d come up with a very creative new pose that was also fairly emotive.  I was quite proud of myself.  Two problems arose with that.  Continue reading

Day 52: LOTS of Crummy Drawings … More is better, right?

Self Portrait of Someone ElseI decided that I wanted to do one of those self portrait thingies today.  It seems to be what all the cool kids are doing these days and I’ve never actually tried drawing myself in the mirror before.  I’ve done self portraits from the imagination and self portraits from photographs but never a self portrait from the mirror.  So here’s the result of that experiment.  The good news is: it pretty much looks like a person!  The bad news: it doesn’t look even remotely like me.  Not even a little bit.  No one ever warned me that this could happen.  Clearly there was some other person hanging out in my mirror.  I have no idea who she was but she’s definitely not me.  Oh well, I guess I’ll have to give it another try sometime.  Hopefully she goes away. Day 51: A Little Wet but Still Alive

ISword Stand am still alive and my house has not been washed or blown away.  Yay!  I’m not sure that the cyclone has actually hit us yet although we’ve been feeling its effects for the last two days.  It’s been downgraded to a category one now though and it has finally stopped raining, at least for now, so I don’t think my death is really imminent.  Of course that means I need to get more sketches posted!

I drew our wooden sword stand with the wooden words on it.  Yes, we have a wooden sword stand.  I’d like to have real swords but they’re too expensive so I settled for this.  This is a pretty basic sketch of it.  Again, I was focusing on the proportions more than anything else.  I think the proportions aren’t too bad but they’re not exactly great either.  This on was a bit more complicated than the last couple drawings I did.  Looks like I’m getting there very slowly but I still need a lot more practice.  I might try doing a lot of really simple things next instead of one complicated thing.  That might work out a bit better.  Probably a little bit of both is best though and I do like trying to get in at least one actual sketch a day.  Continue reading
