Day 268: Just Another Wildly Inaccurate Self Portrait

Just Another Wildly Inaccurate Self PortraitI am definitely moving in the wrong direction again here.  Somehow I seem to have drifted to an even later sketch time today resulting in even greater fatigue.  This is definitely not a positive trend.

Anyway, Teresa over at One Good Thing challenged us all to do monthly self-portraits on the 25th of each month.  This is my contribution for the month.  It may be an hour or so late but I just about managed to squeeze it in there.  It’s really great to see some of the self-portraits that the rest of you have been doing too.  I had actually been doing at least one self portrait a month as it was but it’s so much more fun when there’s a designated day and everyone else is doing it with you.

A while back I posited that the more familiar a face is, or the more attached you are to the subject, the harder it becomes to draw.  I’m still fairly convinced of that which makes self-portraits all the more challenging.  This one really still doesn’t look anything like me.  I can’t say for sure where it stands on the progress scale relative to my previous attempts but it’s definitely not me yet.  Not only didn’t I capture a very good likeness but I somehow also managed to distort the image.  My sketch ended up all squished looking.  It’s like I stretched the photo vertically without realizing it.  I think that’s a new way of screwing up the proportions for me.  I seem to be doing a lot of that lately though.  Well, I guess I’ll just have to take another go at it next month.

  1. Yes! Hasn’t it been super fun looking at everyone else’s selfies? I think yours is wonderful…the pose, the over-the-shoulder glance, the shading! I think you did great even if you don’t think it looks like yourself. 🙂 I also think you have a serious talent in rendering fabric/clothing. Fabric is not an easy thing to convey, but you nailed it!

    1. Thank you 🙂 I’m glad you liked it and glad you organized a day for all of us to give this a shot. It definitely is super fun seeing everyone’s selfies.

I do like the pose for this one. I did it off of a photo and that was basically the reason I chose that particular photo. Now that you mention it I do seem to have a much easier time rendering realistic looking clothing and fabric than I do faces. I’m not quite sure why though.

    1. It’s definitely a great exercise and I loved seeing everyone else’s selfies too. Everyone has their own unique style and it seems like we all took a different approach to it. It makes for it really interesting to browse through.

    1. Thank you 🙂 I’m glad I was able to get some of the character across even if I wasn’t able to get the proportions quite right or capture recognizable features.

The pose is definitely my favourite part though. I drew this off of a photo and I chose the photo for the pose.

    1. Thank you 🙂 I think it really is great to do them monthly. That way you’re doing them often enough to get some good practice with it but far enough apart that you don’t get too discouraged and may even see some progress.

  2. I was wondering if it was from a photo, but you’ve already answered that question! The shading makes it very dramatic, and I like that you are smiling. I never seem to smile when drawing myself! (K.)

    1. Yes, I contemplated drawing myself in front of the mirror but I just wasn’t feeling it. For some reason I decided that I didn’t look enough like myself that day. Don’t ask me what that means but I ended up choosing a photo of myself instead. When I draw myself in front of the mirror I’m never smiling but I suppose that’s because I’m concentrating. With photos I can pick and choose my expression.
