In case anyone was wondering, it ended up being a little over three hours of sleep last night. Needless to say I am very very tired right now. I think I was ready to collapse a couple of hours ago really. This whole sleeping thing definitely still needs work. I still managed to get my sketch in though, somehow.
It’s just another completely random person from a completely random Something To Draw photo. I really like drawing people. I like drawing animals too … but I think people are my favourites. Objects I’m a lot less keen on. I don’t draw too many of those. Maybe if objects had expressions they’d be more interesting to me. This is turning into a bit of a stream of consciousness. I shouldn’t type blog posts when I’m this tired. Anyway, this lovely photo was submitted by pepoexpress. Many thanks for the inspiration. Back to bed with me now to work on that whole sleeping thing some more.
Good for you for pushing yourself to do art even when you’re exhausted! I’m with you: I much prefer drawing people and animals than objects. I really like the way the shadows worked on this old guy.

Thank you! I am quite set on not missing a day in my year of daily sketches. That’s enough to push me when I’m exhausted.

This looks wonderful, love the contrast and the shadows in it. I especially like how you did his clothes, this underlines his character somehow. Great work!!!

Thank you! I felt like his clothes were somehow a big part of his character too. They were actually what I started with. It seemed important to get them down.

His clothes are wonderful and it’s odd (in a brilliant way!) how the man looks very graphic while his pipe could almost be a photograph. It’s very striking and I love it.

Thank you 🙂 That wasn’t really entirely intentional, it just sort of worked out that way. The shadows on the pipe were very definite, the ones on the man a bit less so.

This style could translate very well to creepy book illustrations. Really something. One of my favorites!

Thank you 🙂 I’m really glad you liked it. I quite like this one myself. He feels like a great character.

These keep getting better and better. (in an inverse to your sleep habits? hmmm…) (K.)

Hmmm … are you suggesting that not sleeping makes me a better artist? I’m not convinced that would be a worthwhile sacrifice.
Luckily correlation does not equal causation so let’s just hope it’s a coincidence. I’ll just have to keep working on improving the old fashioned way I think, with sweat and tears :).
