It’s nice to have a bit more of a focus for a little while. I’m enjoying playing with shading for a change. I also actually did do this sketch at a pretty reasonable time of day despite how late I’m posting it. I was just procrastinating on typing out a blog post to go with it. Does that still count as progress? I’m going to pretend it does.
The reference photo I used for this sketch was another random Something To Draw photo, submitted by Teruhide Tomori. This lovely woman in a black kimono with white face paint was just too tempting to resist. What better subject could you hope for for a study in contrast and shading? This was definitely a really fun one to work with.
Can’t go wrong with kimonos and a black/white study! The composition is pretty perfect, too!

Another good job with the expression. I also like the shadow on her neck.

Thanks! The eyes were a bit off on this one but that’s something I’m working on. I am having fun with the shading though.

I really like her expression. The three tones are working really well

Thanks 🙂 I’m trying to get a handle on working with three tones. It’s interesting.

Line drawing in pen as usual. Shading was done using two different brush tipped markers.
