So I have a new favourite show that I’ve been obsessing over lately. It started out mostly just as another thing to have playing in the background while I was drawing but slowly I fell more and more in love with it. The character I tried to draw today is most of the reason for that. He is my absolute favourite character and every scene he’s in is absolutely golden. Seriously, I think I’m developing an unhealthy obsession with him.
Sadly I have not managed to capture him at all. I took two shots at it from two very different photos but neither of them quite worked out. It seems like the closer I am to my subject the worse my drawings turn out. Does anyone else find that? I think it’s that I can dissociate myself much more easily from subjects I’m not attached to and break them down into shapes and lines. The more attached I am to a subject the more focused I am on the results. I think I just fret over it more and have a harder time getting it right as a result.
Anyway, given my aforementioned unhealthy levels of adoration for this character I doubt this will be the last time I attempt to draw him. He will probably crop up again at some point. I want to get at least one sketch I like of him. That may require a few more attempts.
Great portraits! It doesn´t really matter if you captured him or not, I think. That´s why it´s called “painting” and not “photography”. In paintings you capture something else. Maybe the soul? Or the essence of something. I don´t know… But I think you did a really good job on this!

Thank you 🙂 I’m glad I was able to capture something at least. I think I’ll still give it another shot at some point to better capture the features but the spirit does seem to be there.

😀 Why thank you, dearie! You pretty much made my day.
I’m so glad he was at least somewhat recognizable.

😀 Thank you dearie. You have no idea how happy you made me by recognizing him.
I’m still just on Season 2 right now but my appetite for this show is pretty voracious right now. I am completely obsessed. Most of that comes down to just how much I love this guy. He is most certainly the best everrr!

These are great…love those hands.

Thank you 🙂 I was not pretty disappointed with the hands as I was drawing them and convinced they would turn out horrid. Once I finished those they actually ended up being my favourite part of the drawing.

Careful dearie, names are powerful things 😉
Seriously though, I’m so glad that so many of you were able to recognize him despite his face looking nothing like Robert Carlyle in these sketches.

There’s only the one like him…he was the only reason I ever watched the show 🙂
