Day 67: Just a Basic Sunday Hand Sketch

Basic hand SketchToday’s sketch is just sort of a bare bones hand sketch.  I’m continuing my tradition of drawing a new hand every Sunday.  It’s a tradition that’s served me well because it gives me good practice with this somewhat difficult area of anatomy and gives me at least one day of the week where I don’t have to think of something to draw.  Today that’s especially useful because I’m actually feeling quite burned out.

I had some grand schemes of doing a much nicer more detailed hand sketch today but I ended up leaving it a bit late for that and was a bit too tired.  I haven’t gotten much sleep for the last few days so I’ve been feeling pretty worn out all day today.  I didn’t really want to push it too much.  I figure I need to do my best to get a decent night’s sleep tonight if I have any hopes of actually being productive and catching up on some of my workload tomorrow.

So instead I decided to just focus in on my line work again.  I was going for nice smooth clean lines that just get across the basic form.  I don’t think it turned out too bad all things considered.  I think the palm got a little out of hand though.  It was hard to figure out which lines were necessary to get across the shape and form in that area and which weren’t because there were so many.  It was also difficult to separate them out and figure out shapes and what everything was doing.  I think it turned into a bit of spaghetti as a result.  Still, overall it looks like a hand and I managed to get my lines looking a bit more confident than usual.

I really do think my hand drawings are improving as I go.  Maybe I should set aside one day a week to do figure drawings so that I can start making some progress on those too.  Then again I don’t want to divide up my week too much and become too structured.  It’s difficult to strike a balance sometimes.

    1. Thank you. Hands are getting less scary for me to draw the more I practice them. Feet though are another matter. I definitely still have issues with those … and the rest of the human anatomy.

    1. Thanks for the encouragement. I’ll have to choose a day to set aside for it.

I also need to work out a proper method for practicing figures. It’s a bit more difficult to find a good subject for them than for hands.
